OnePlus One teases specs on par with Xperia Z2 for half the price

OnePlus is a new start-up company formed late last year by (who used to run Oppo’s Blu-ray division). Lau’s mantra is to shake up the mobile industry: “Looking at the smartphone market right now, I see a lot of wannabes but few truly outstanding products fit for the demanding consumer. That’s what I want to address with OnePlus.”

The OnePlus One is Lau’s response to that dream and whilst the formal launch is not taking place until Wednesday 23 April 2014, the company has been teasing specs for a while. Yesterday, OnePlus put up a spec comparison against the Xperia Z2 highlighting that, on the face of it at least, the OnePlus One offers similar specs for only half the price of the Xperia Z2.

The Oneplus One will feature a 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 chipset (MSM8974-AC), 3GB RAM, 5.5-inch 1080p IPS display and 13MP Sony Exmor (IMX214) camera with 6 lens f/2.0 aperture capable of 4K and 720p 120fps video. Other features include a 3100mAh sealed battery, 5MP front-facing camera, stereo speakers and 16/64GB storage capacity options.

Oneplus teamed up with CyanogenMod quite early on, which means that the OnePlus One will be running CyanogenMod 11S (a customised version of CM11). The phone will receive 2 year CyanogenMod support.

Whilst the design of the OnePlus One remains a mystery so far, the company is promising a premium design. Despite the 5.5-inch sized display, the OnePlus One is expected to be smaller than the 5-inch Xperia Z1.

Obviously, there are a few things left out in OnePlus’ spec comparison including water resistance and micro SD memory card slot compatibility. Despite this, there’s no denying that the OnePlus One is an ambitious project that we’ll be keeping an eye on when it launches next week.
